Used-car prices leap on US economic recovery and supply crunch

Used car prices in the U.S. are soaring.

The Manheim U.S. Used Vehicle Value Index, a gauge of pricing trends, soared to a fresh record Tuesday as factors ranging from chip shortages to a rebounding economy conspired to keep pressure on automotive inventories.

The index, which updates mid-month, rose by 6.8% in the first 15 days of April from the final March figure and jumped 52% from the same period a year ago to a level of 191.4.

The index is compiled by market researcher Cox Automotive Inc. The data takes into account all U.S. sales through Cox’s Manheim automotive auctions that fall in to one of 20 different market classes, excluding motorcycles and vehicles like heavy trucks, and is adjusted for seasonality and mileage.

“Demand is perfectly stimulated from improving consumer sentiment, recovering jobs, accumulated pandemic savings, tax refund season, and American Rescue Plan cash payments,” Cox Chief Economist

Renesas fire threatens to deepen global chip supply woes

Japan’s government and automakers are lining up to offer support to a key chip manufacturer following a factory fire that could worsen a global semiconductor shortage plaguing car firms.

The blaze at one of Renesas’s plants last week comes at the worst possible time for the auto sector, which is already battling supply problems in part because of increased demand for chips from manufacturers of laptops, tablets and gaming devices.

“Amid global concerns over a semiconductor shortage, there could be a substantial impact,” wrote UBS Securities Japan analysts Kenji Yasui and Sean Park in a note after the fire.

Renesas controls about 35 percent of the market for automotive semiconductors and company president Hidetoshi Shibata warned this weekend of a “very big” impact on global chip supply.

Now Japan’s government and some of Renesas’s own customers, including top-selling Toyota, are offering help, in a sign of the deep concern caused

Factory blaze adds to computer chip supply crisis

One of the car industry’s biggest computer chip suppliers has warned that a major fire at one of its factories in Japan could have a “massive impact” on its ability to fulfil orders.

The incident comes at a time when supplies of chips to the auto industry were already running short.

Shares in the semiconductors firm Renesas fell, along with its clients including Toyota, Nissan and Honda.

Elsewhere, Volkswagen has said chip scarcity might last until the autumn.

“I think things will get stable by the fall but certainly its going to be complicated, and its going to be challenging but I think we’ll navigate it,” Scott Keogh, VW’s North America chief executive told the BBC.

He added that some of the company’s plants were likely to run fewer shifts a day, but added that he hoped factory shutdowns could be averted.
