The World Car Finals will take place next month on April 20, 2021, and ahead of the grand finale the World Car Awards announced the top three nominations for each of the five categories for the 2021 edition. A jury of 93 international automotive journalists selected the finalists by a secret ballot based on their evaluation of each eligible vehicle as part of their professional work which was tabulated by KPMG.

The 2021 World Car Awards is divided into five categories- World Car of the Year, World Urban Car, World Luxury Car, World Performance Car, and World Car Design of the Year. The top three nominated for the 2021 World Car of the Year include Honda-e, Toyota Yaris, and Volkswagen ID.4. The trio beat the likes of Audi A3, BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe, BMW 4-Series, Kia K5, Kia Sorento, Mazda MX-30, and Mercedes-Benz GLA to complete the podium.

Next is the World Urban Car Awards and the top three nominated in this category include Honda-e, Honda Jazz and the Toyota Yaris. The three Japanese models beat the likes of Hyundai Grand i10, and Hyundai i20. In the World Luxury Car category, the top three- Land Rover Defender, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and Polestar 2 will battle it out in the finals. The trio overcame obstacles from Aston Martin DBX, BMW X6, and the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

The next category is for the World Performance Car award and the top three nominated here include Audi RS Q8, Porsche 911 Turbo, and Toyota GR Yaris. The three finalists beat the German onslaught of BMW M2 CS, BMW X5 M, and BMW X6 M. Finally, the World Car Design of the Year includes all the cars mentioned above to compete. The finalist however includes Honda-e, Land Rover Defender, and Mazda MX30 battling it out to take the top honors. A design panel consisting of seven highly respected world design experts was asked to first review each candidate, and then establish a short-list of recommendations for the jurors’ final vote.

For the 2022 edition, the World Car Awards program will also debut the World Electric Vehicle of the Year award. This new award is intended to recognize, support, and celebrate the global transition to electrically-powered vehicles that is now underway and the efforts of automakers around the world in developing these climate-conscious vehicles.
