Car and Driver Announces Our 2022 Editors’ Choice Winners

  • The Editors’ Choice list highlights the vehicles ranked highest by Car and Driver editors in each of the market’s 37 segments.
  • Of nearly 400 models on the market, just 116 of the best cars, crossovers, SUVs, trucks, and electric vehicles qualify as Editors’ Choice picks.
  • Editors’ Choice winners have passed through a gauntlet that includes instrumented testing, road-driving evaluations, and assessments of how well they fulfill their intended mission and their value.

Dreaming of a new ride? Shopping seriously for one? Or are you simply wanting to know which of this year’s vehicles are best so you can continue being the unquestioned neighborhood car guru? Our Editors’ Choice list has what you need.

Think of the vehicles on this list as the honor students of the automotive marketplace. Of the roughly 400 models for sale in the United States this year, the 116 that earn an Editors’ Choice nod comprise the cars, trucks, crossovers, SUVs, and electric vehicles that scored the top grades in their respective segments.

Car and Driver tests more cars—more thoroughly—than anyone on the planet,” says Chief Brand Officer Eddie Alterman. “Our Editors’ Choice lineup represents a wide spectrum of great cars that we editors would love to park in our garages—if we only had the room!”

The criteria we use to select vehicles for the Editors’ Choice list start with the results of our rigorous instrumented testing and also include our subjective evaluations of each vehicle’s performance in real-world use; our assessment of how well a vehicle fulfills its intended mission; its value; how much fun it is to drive; and where the vehicle ranks in its segment versus its competitors. Only vehicles that are on sale in 2022, and those that the staff has had hands-on driving experience with, are eligible. The vehicles that have earned a spot on our 2022 10Best list—summa cum laude grads all—are automatic inductees into the Editors’ Choice list, for obvious reasons.

37 Segments Include New EV Categories

We’re also evolving the categories that make up Editors’ Choice to reflect how electric vehicles have proliferated in size and price and capability. As a result, we’ve added five new segments just for them: Electric Cars, Electric Crossovers and SUVs, Electric Pickup Trucks, Luxury Electric Cars, and Luxury Electric Crossovers and SUVs. You’ll find the best of each on the list.

That brings the total number of segments from which we draw vehicles for Editors’ Choice to 37. For the record, we purposely exclude several truly expensive market segments—those that contain cars including Rolls-Royces, Lamborghinis, and McLarens—from Editors’ Choice consideration. Those cars had better be stellar for that kind of money. This is a shopping list for the rest of us.

And the good news is, there is huge choice for shoppers in the thick, mainstream part of the market today. Some segments, including SUVs and mid-size luxury crossovers, have grown to as many as 30 entries. If you’d rather not sort through a conga line of vehicles to find the overachievers, then use the Editors’ Choice list like a report card to narrow your choices. It’ll take you right to the head of each class.
