Since COVID, business at local bike shops is the best it has ever been! So much in fact, the demand is greater than the supply of bikes. We made a visit to TEAM Cycling & Fitness on Colerain Avenue and sat down with President Geoff Theilmeyer who said there are plenty of benefits to biking if that’s something you’ve been considering. It’s good for both mental and physical health, the environment — plus it keeps money in your wallet, rather than your gas tank. Thielmeyer said if you want to purchase a bike, its best to support local and avoid those big box stores, “It’s always best to get it at a bike shop because there’s so many unknown variables when shopping for a bike. Bikes are very complex pieces of equipment. Every manufacturer measures their bikes differently so you know, getting the right bike that fits correctly that you’re going to be comfortable on is definitely something that needs to happen. It’s best to do that at a shop with somebody that’s an expert in sizing and fitting.”Thielmeyer said plan to spend $500 or more on your first bike. If that sounds like a lot of money, you can think of it as an investment. Money put into your bike will save you in the long run at the pump. Bikes at local stores are also made well and are designed to last.Whether you’re new to the area or a lifelong resident, it’s no secret that Cincinnati is full of hills. That might seem intimidating for a first time bike owner. One bike quickly gaining popularity is the e-bike for a variety of different reasons. Thielmeyer said, “E bikes is the largest growing segment in the bicycle industry. It is growing every year in double digit growth. It’s because they are so much fun to ride. They make hills significantly easier. Like here in Cincinnati, there’s no such thing as flat. So if you want to get a bike that’s going to make a hill significantly easier to climb, these will do that. The technology is getting better and better and they’re becoming lighter. Almost at the same weight as a regular bicycle. They will do distances up to 50 and 60 miles. So they are a great option as an alternative for transportation.”You charge these bikes in your wall at home, just like you would your phone. They can run for anywhere from 2.5 to 3 hours and make getting from point a to point b that much more smooth. If you’re worried you won’t get a workout, Thielmeyer said you’ll still have to put in the same pedal output, you’ll just move four times faster. These bikes start at around $2,500
