The finalists in the 2021 World Car Awards have been revealed after 93 jurors overcame coronavirus challenges to vote on a longlist of dozens of cars.

A total of 10 cars will go forward and run for 2021 World Car of the Year, while five cars each will battle to win Urban Car of the Year, Luxury Car of the Year, Performance Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year.

The overall victor will succeed 2020’s World Car of the Year, the Kia Telluride.

Billed as the World Car Finals, jurors will now complete another round of secret judging (overseen by KPMG) to decide the top three finalists in each category.

Motoring Research has listed the full rundown of finalists below.

In the main World Car of the Year category, two brands are represented twice – BMW with the 2 Series Gran Coupe and 4 Series, and Kia with the K5 / Optima and Sorento.

Other highlights include the Toyota Yaris, which recently won the 2021 European Car of the Year prize.

BMW is also represented twice in the World Performance Car of the Year category, while Hyundai is ranked twice in the World Urban Car of the Year category, with the i10 and i20.

Honda has two entries for the World Urban Car gong too, with the Honda e and Jazz.

The next stage in the competition will be revealed on 30 March, when the Top Three in the World are revealed in each category.

Winners in all five categories will be declared on Tuesday 20 April.

Although the World Car Awards is normally announced at the New York International Auto Show, the global pandemic means this will not be possible for the second year running. However, organisers have confirmed the partnership with the show remains, for the 16th consecutive year.

Both the 2022 awards and the 18th edition of the ‘Road to the World Car Awards’ assessment process will begin at the 2021 New York show on 19 August.

There will be a new highlight for the 2022 awards too – the very first World Electric Vehicle of the Year award.
