2022 World Car Of The Year’s Three Finalists Are All Electric Crossovers

Crossovers of all shapes and sizes are in high demand right now and it seems the very best ones are electric. The three finalists for the World Car of the year competition have been announced and they’re all sporty electric high riders – Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.

The latter has already been crowned (European) Car of the Year for 2022, so its presence among the top three is not surprising. Hyundai Ioniq 5 is equally talented and geared more towards comfort, but its polarizing design is not as unanimously appreciated as the Kia’s. The Mach-E is a direct rival to the talented Korean duo and together they also suggest which size segment is the most hotly contested.

The 2022 World Car of the Year will again be a pure electric vehicle as the top three finalists for the prized gong are revealed.

The Ford Mustang Mach-e, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 have come out on top of a 10-car group of finalists and will now battle for the top prize to be presented in New York next month.

The winner will follow on from the 2021 victor, the Volkswagen ID.4 – continuing the reign of EVs in the World Car of the Year category.

Another electric car, the Jaguar I-Pace, scooped the top prize in 2019.

The 2022 winner will be announced at this year’s New York International Auto Show on Wednesday 13 April.

The World Car Finals will take place next month on April 20, 2021, and ahead of the grand finale the World Car Awards announced the top three nominations for each of the five categories for the 2021 edition. A jury of 93 international automotive journalists selected the finalists by a secret ballot based on their evaluation of each eligible vehicle as part of their professional work which was tabulated by KPMG.

The 2021 World Car Awards is divided into five categories- World Car of the Year, World Urban Car, World Luxury Car, World Performance Car, and World Car Design of the Year. The top three nominated for the 2021 World Car of the Year include Honda-e, Toyota Yaris, and Volkswagen ID.4. The finalists in the 2021 World Car Awards have been revealed after 93 jurors overcame coronavirus challenges to vote on a longlist of dozens of cars.

A total of 10 cars will go forward and run for 2021 World Car of the Year, while five cars each will battle to win Urban Car of the Year, Luxury Car of the Year, Performance Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year.

The overall victor will succeed 2020’s World Car of the Year, the Kia Telluride.

Billed as the World Car Finals, jurors will now complete another round of secret judging (overseen by KPMG) to decide the top three finalists in each category.
