10. Porsche 935/78 ‘Moby Dick’
Year: 1978

Few would call the Group 5 silhouette racers of the late-1970s beautiful but they were dramatic. And the long-tailed 935 was perhaps the most outrageous of all.

The 935 was already the pacesetter in the category when ‘Moby Dick’, described by some as a ‘rule-bender’, arrived at Silverstone and promptly won the six-hour event by seven laps in the hands of Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass.

Le Mans, where it was driven by Rolf Stommelen and Manfred Schurti, was the bigger test. The 3.2-litre turbocharged engine produced more than 750bhp, helping the 935/78 to match the fastest Group 6 prototypes down the Mulsanne Straight, topping 220mph.

Since 1952, Classic Car Club of America has been working to collecting and preserving some of the finest cars from around the globe. The organization also helps educate the public and boost appreciation for the fine craftsmanship found in older automobiles. As technology pushes ahead and we see all kinds of stories in mainstream media about kids these days supposedly not even wanting to learn how to drive, it’s good to know not everyone wants to slam the door on the history of the automobile.

CCCA pours most of its time and energy into a specific range of car model years: 1915 to 1948. That not to say a Packard from 1911 won’t get any attention.

About midday on June 2, 1970, the Goodwood circuit in south-east England fell silent. Bruce McLaren had been testing his latest Can-Am car and was squeezing in one more lap before lunch when the vehicle’s rear bodywork came adrift on the Levant Straight and he slammed into an abandoned marshal’s post at 180 mph. Motorsport had lost a true hero of the racetrack at the age of 32.

Fifty years on, Bruce McLaren is still revered in motoring circles around the world. And it’s no wonder. He won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966 driving a Ford GT40, then the 12 Hours of Sebring the following year. Team McLaren also dominated Can-Am from 1967 to 1972—Bruce himself winning the series in 1967 and 1969—and his eponymous F1 team has gone on to claim eight World Constructors’ Championships and 12 World Drivers’

The drag racing scene from the ’60s and ’70s was a lot like the Wild West with racers doing just about anything to gain an advantage, and that’s exactly what Milburn Varner and his brother-in-law David Rehring had done in 1970. Starting with a dealership fresh 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda, Varner transformed this Mopar muscle car into a Hemi-powered drag car, which he ran until 1974 before parking it in his basement garage.

This ‘Cuda was originally featured in Hot Rod magazine back in 2014, but following Varner’s death in 2018, automotive journalist Tommy Lee Byrd recounts his conversations with Varner and gives us an update about this Plum Crazy ‘Cuda drag car on his Hot Rod Hoarder YouTube page.
