The best and worst electric cars on the market

Electric vehicles are a fast-growing segment of the automotive market, and the trend is only expected to continue as manufacturing costs decline and sales incentives carry on. If you’re in the market for an EV, here are 10 you should consider, and 10 you should avoid.

Best: Hyundai Kona Electric

The Hyundai Kona Electric boasts a maximum range of 415 kilometres (258 miles) and is one of the first electric sub-compact SUVs. It comes complete with alloy wheels, LED lights, and a unique grille design.

Worst: BMW i3

Not only is the BMW i3 one of the most expensive electric cars available today, but you won’t be getting very far with it. It offers a range of just 246 km (153 mi.).

Best: Nissan Leaf

The Nissan Leaf is the best-selling EV of all time worldwide, and for good reason. It offers an extended range of 363 km (226 mi.) and comes complete with the latest in cutting-edge tech.

Worst: Hyundai Ioniq Electric

The Hyundai Ioniq Electric is fun and easy to drive, but its ride and handling are subpar. It only offers a range of 273 km (170 mi.). The interior feels a bit cramped—especially in the rear seats.

Best: Kia Niro EV

The Kia Niro EV boasts an all-electric range of 385 km (239 mi.) and is only available in limited quantities. It offers ample cargo space and a terrific warranty, and has performed well in safety and reliability ratings.

Worst: Mini Cooper SE Electric

The Mini Cooper SE Electric is a newer entrant into the EV space, and boasts the hallmark design and handling of a classic Mini, in an all-electric package. Its major downside is its range, which is just 183 km (114 mi.).

Best: Chevrolet Bolt

With a fresh redesign for the 2022 year, the Chevrolet Bolt boasts spacious seating, abundant cargo capacity, and energetic acceleration. It offers a range of 417 km (259 mi.).

Worst: Chevrolet Volt

While it’s since been replaced by the Bolt, if you’re in the market for a used EV, steer clear of the Chevrolet Volt. In recent years, people have reported issues with the drive system, power equipment, and cabin electronics.

Best: Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y boasts a range of 525 km (326 mi.) and is essentially a crossover version of the company’s Model 3 sedan. It handles well and offers a roomy and comfortable interior, coming complete with all the latest features and tech.

Worst: Ford Focus Electric

While the Ford Focus Electric may have been retired, you can still find them on the used market. Avoid them, however, as they are riddled with problems, including transmission, cabin electronics, drive system, engine, body hardware, and power equipment.

Best: Jaguar I-Pace

Just because you’re looking to go electric doesn’t mean you have to give up luxury, and the Jaguar I-Pace proves it. It is available with all-wheel drive and an adaptive air suspension system for a comfortable, everyday drive.

Worst: Honda Clarity

The Honda Clarity might have an aerodynamic body, but that doesn’t do much for its performance. It’s not pretty to look at, and only has a 161 hp engine. As it’s a hybrid electric, it still has CO2 emissions of an average of 176 g/km.

Best: Audi e-tron

Offering unparalleled luxury options and features, the Audi e-tron also offers an impressive 357-kilometre (222-mile) range. It fares very well in crash testing, and includes state-of-the-art technology features, many coming standard.

Worst: Kia Soul EV

The Kia Soul EV boasts the same ugly box design as the gas-powered version, and offers some of the worst MPGe of electric cars available, at 93 MPGe.

Best: Porsche Taycan

The company’s first electric car, the Porsche Taycan features intense acceleration and excellent ride and handling. The cabin is more than spacious enough for four adults, and there’s two trunks for securely storing your gear.

Worst: Toyota Mirai

With some of the worst MPGe among electric cars available at 67/64 MPGe, the Toyota Mirai is one EV you want to steer clear of. Its one redeeming quality it its range—up to 647 km (402 mi.).

Best: Tesla Model 3

One of the most popular EVs available today, the Tesla Model 3 even outsells many of its gas-powered competitors. Not only does it offer brisk acceleration and agile handling, but it also features a spacious cabin and fares extremely well in crash test results.
